From Depression to Self-Discovery: A Journey Through Yoga

Ahsen’s Story

In 2016, when I was 30 years old, my world was turned upside down. Despite being innocent, I lost my job due to the political turmoil in my country. I felt lost, confused, and without direction. Depression hit me like a freight train, and I struggled to find my way out of the darkness.

Then, out of the blue, I found myself in a yoga class at my gym. It was like a stroke of luck. From the moment I stepped onto the mat, I felt like I had found the answer I’d been searching for. Yoga became a lifeline, a way to connect with myself and heal the wounds that had been hurting me so deeply. I was finding my way back to who I truly was, and that was a beautiful and powerful thing.

I started practicing yoga regularly and made friends with the instructor. Yoga became my sanctuary, and I realized that it could be a way of life, not just a physical practice. It had eight stages that were helping me to become my best: self—restraint, positive duties, posture, breathing techniques, sense withdrawal, focused concentration, meditative absorption, and bliss. The way of yoga was long and hard, but it guided me toward understanding myself and the world around me.

I later decided to become a yoga instructor, a brave step for me. As an instructor, I was able to help others find the same peace and balance that I found through yoga. I realized it was not just about the physical postures, but also about cultivating mindfulness and compassion. It was about being aware of the present moment, the breath, and the energy within the body.

Through teaching, I shared my own journey with others and helped them find their own paths to self-discovery and transformation. I learned that yoga is a practice of self-awareness and self-acceptance. It is a journey inward, toward understanding our own thoughts, feelings, and habits. I discovered that yoga is not just about the body, but also about the mind and the heart. It is about connecting with ourselves and the world around us.

I learned that when we are open to new experiences and willing to explore different paths, we may find unexpected joys and insights. I am grateful for the journey that yoga has taken me on, and I am eager to continue to share the benefits of this practice with others.

Through my practice of yoga, I have come to understand that life is a journey and that it is important to be present and to live in the moment. Yoga has taught me that we do not have to live in the past or the future, but that we can find peace and contentment in the present. I have learned that yoga is about accepting myself for who I am, and that I do not have to be perfect or have all the answers. Instead, I can accept my limitations and allow myself to be open to new possibilities.

Through my practice, I have also learned the value of community and connection. Yoga is not just about being alone on a mat, but about coming together with others and supporting each other on our journeys. In this way, yoga is not just about the self, but also about the connection between the self and the world.

I am grateful for the opportunity to teach yoga and to share this practice with others. I hope that through yoga, we can all find peace and happiness in our lives, and that we can learn to live with kindness and compassion.
