From Patient to Practitioner: A Psychologist’s Personal Journey from Bulimia to Supporting Others

Introduction:

Explore Dara’s powerful journey from a young woman battling bulimia to a dedicated psychologist. Her personal struggles with bulimia and self-worth, combined with a transformative passion for weightlifting, shaped her path. Now practicing in Dubai, Dara channels her experiences into supporting and empowering others, turning her own pain into purpose and guidance.

Dara’s Story:

Growing up in Russia, societal pressures on body image weighed heavily on me. I was constantly bombarded with images of thin, idealized beauty, and I became obsessed with achieving that look. This obsession led me into a spiral of bulimia that lasted for two long, painful years. The cycle of binging and purging became my life, and it was all-consuming. The secrecy and shame that accompanied it were overwhelming.

My friends were the first to notice something was wrong. They encouraged me to seek help, and though it felt like a defeat at the time, I decided to see a psychologist. That decision marked the beginning of a transformative journey. In therapy, I started to confront not only my eating disorder but also deeper issues related to my family life.

My mother was a hardworking teacher who juggled three jobs to support our family. While I admired her dedication, it left little room for us to connect. I often felt neglected and unloved, which contributed to my struggles with self-worth and confidence. Therapy helped me see that my feelings of inadequacy and the emotional void I felt were tied to my mother’s absence. I was angry with her for a long time, feeling that her absence was a personal slight. But over time, I began to appreciate her sacrifices to provide us with a better life. This shift in perspective helped me heal from the resentment I had harbored.

Alongside addressing these emotional wounds, I found solace in weightlifting and bodybuilding. Initially, it was a way to take control of my body, but it evolved into a passion that transformed my self-image. The discipline required for bodybuilding and the tangible improvements I saw in my physical strength gave me a profound sense of accomplishment and self-worth. It wasn’t just about looking good—it was about feeling powerful and capable. The dedication I poured into my workouts became a vital part of my healing process, and it provided me with a new, positive sense of self.

My journey through therapy sparked an interest in psychology, revealing the potential for helping others as I had been helped. Despite my initial doubts about pursuing a career in psychology, the encouragement from my psychologist and my own experiences motivated me to pursue this path. I decided to study psychology, a decision supported by my husband and completed my degree over nearly four years.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I took time to reflect on my journey and wrote a book of 16 stories. Although I chose not to publish it, feeling that I needed more experience and knowledge, the process reinforced my desire to build a strong foundation in psychology. I wanted to ensure that I could offer meaningful support to others before sharing my insights more broadly.

After graduating, I began practicing as a psychologist in Dubai. My practice is diverse, and I work with clients of all ages, helping them navigate their emotional and psychological challenges. One of the approaches I use involves helping clients understand how their emotions manifest physically. For example, I might use visualization techniques to help them place their emotions outside of their bodies, offering a new perspective and facilitating healing.

My personal experiences, particularly with bulimia and body image, have deeply influenced my approach to therapy. I am especially passionate about helping young women who face similar struggles. My journey has given me insight into the complexities of self-worth and body image, making me a compassionate and empathetic therapist.

Reflecting on my journey, I’m grateful for the path that led me to where I am today. The challenges I faced have shaped me into a therapist who understands the profound impact of personal struggles. Now, as I help others navigate their own journeys, I am reminded of the resilience and growth that can emerge from even the most difficult experiences.

I’m dedicated to supporting individuals both in person and through online consultations. Whether you’re seeking guidance with personal challenges or looking for a compassionate ear, I’m here to help you navigate your journey. To book an appointment please contact me via my details below:
